Water is Love, an upcoming docu-series, explores the crucial relation between water cycles and the climate. In an original and brand new 12 minute animation featured in the first episode Water & Climate, we portray a healthy water cycle, the consequences of its destruction and how our broken water cycle can be restored. How do we respond to climate breakdown? How can we find meaning in times of ecological collapse? There are 2 typical responses often given in mainstream environmentalism. One is of hope, of saying, “We can solve the climate crisis!” or “We will win this war!”; the other of hopelessness, of saying, “It's too late. We're screwed!” In this short excerpt of a speech he recently gave at Tamera, Martin Winiecki critically assesses the saviorism underlying both of these reactions. He also explores a deeper response that's beyond the attitude of humanity saving the Earth. Martin is a long-term member of Tamera, an activist and a founder member of the Defend the Sacred Alliance. The water protector and environmental activist Rajendra Singh is known as the ‘Water man from India’ or as ‘Water Gandhi’. He is the founder of the NGO ‘Tarun Bharat Sangh’. In his home region of Rajasthan, he initiated the building of more than 10,000 traditional ‘johads’. These are simple wood and stone constructions which hold rainwater, giving it time to soak into the earth. This has returned a semi-desert of a few thousand square kilometres to fertility. Now, five rivers are again producing water year-round and more than 1000 villages are able to sustain themselves and generate an income. In 2015, Rajendra received the Stockholm Water Award. The Guardian included him on their list of ‘50 people who could save the planet’. We are now crowdfunding on Chuffed to complete the production!
